1972 - 1978   The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.  B.S. and M.S. degrees majoring in Interpretive Services.  Additional minors in Recreational Learning,  Recreational Marketing and Psychology of the Audience.

1981 -1984   Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan.  Ph.D. Program in Parks and Recreation, majoring in Interpretive Services.  Minor work in Adult Education, Tourism Marketing, and Recreational Research Techniques and Strategies.

Work Experience

1973 - 1979   The Ohio State University Museum of Zoology, Curitorial Technician.

1976 - 1979   Seasonal Interpretive Naturalist with Ohio State Parks (Mohican State Park, Loundville, Ohio).

1979 - 1980   Alberta Provincial Parks, Alberta, Canada.  Interpretive Master Planning Consultant.  

1979 - Present     President of John Veverka & Associates (formerly Interpretive Associates), a firm providing a complete range of services in interpretive and heritage tourism master planning, training, and design services - world wide.

Teaching Experience

1978   The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.  Teaching assistant responsible for developing and teaching a course in Interpretive Master Planning.

1981 - 1984   Michigan State University.  Teaching Assistant with total responsibility for developing and teaching both introductory and advanced interpretation courses, including focuses on Interpretive Planning and Planning for Live/Conducted Programs.

1990 - 1991      Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI.  Instructor teaching courses in Business Communication and Speech.

1999 - 2000  New York University, NY.  Associate Professor teaching a summer special studies course in Heritage Interpretation and Tourism Planning/Marketing.

1979 - present   John Veverka has taught or participated in hundreds National and International training courses, workshops and seminars with a wide range of subjects as part of  John Veverka & Associates interpretive training services.  You can visit our web site at http://www.heritageinterp.com for details on current and recent training programs and courses.

1995 - present  Instructor at the Snowdonia National Park Training Center, Wales, UK, teaching two interpretive courses per year - course topics vary.

1999    University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Developed a 6-hour interpretive        
 training video for the Universities Heritage Site Management Certificate program.

2000   -2003. State University of West Georgia - Heritage Tourism Institute.  
Associate Professor teaching several different heritage interpretation/tourism courses offered over the 4 years of the Tourism Institute.

Since 1979 John Veverka has published over 100 articles in national and international journals.

John received his B.S.(1976) and M.S.(1978) degrees majoring in Interpretive Services
from The Ohio State University, with additional minors in marketing, motivational
psychology, and advertising. During this time at OSU, John developed and taught a
course on Interpretive Master Planning, was also on the staff of the Ohio State
University Museum of Zoology (academic years) and spent five summers as an
Interpretive Naturalist with Ohio State Parks. After graduating with his M.S. degree,
John was recruited by Alberta Provincial Parks in Canada (1978-1980) where he helped
develop interpretive plans for two World Heritage Sites (Head-Smashed-In Buffalo
Jump and Dinosaur Provincial Park). In 1981 John returned to Michigan to teach
introductory and advanced interpretation courses at Michigan State University, where
he was also enrolled in the Ph.D. program (1981-1985). Besides interpretation, John
studied recreational learning theory, consumer behavior, recreational marketing and
survey research strategies. John's current work as a consultant in interpretive planning,
training and heritage tourism, spans 34 years and takes him all over the world, working
on projects in Korea, Canada, Spain, Mexico, England, Scotland, Wales, Greece, Malta
and throughout the United States. He lectures widely on Heritage Interpretation and
Interpretation Planning, and serves as a consultant to many different agencies and
organizations world-wide.
